Our Masters programs include coursework-only and advanced options which includes coursework and a final thesis. We have the program to suit your interests, level of professional experience and career aspirations. You can study a Master degree separately, or combine it with other Bachelor or Masters programs in our new flexible study plans. Master of General and Applied Linguistics

Graduate studies in linguistics at ANU draws upon the expertise of the largest concentration of linguists in the southern hemisphere. For more than 20 years, research in linguistics at ANU has focused on the descriptive and comparative study of the languages of Australia, Papua-New Guinea, the Pacific Islands, Indonesia and China. We offer teaching in field and formal linguistics and research across more languages than any other Australian University.

Master of Translation

The Master of Translation program is designed to provide students with a focused qualification in the practice of literary or technical translation. It gives students an understanding of the history of translation, and an appreciation of a number of critical issues in the field. Language specialisations include: Ancient Greek or Latin, Arabic, Australian Indigenous languages, Chinese, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Sanskrit, Spanish, Thai, Turkish and Vietnamese.

Master (Advanced) Programs
Each of the School's Master degrees have an option to study at an advanced level. This entails replacing a semester of coursework with a research thesis. Entry is either by transfer after completing 72 units of coursework, or by direct entry when you apply for admission. Coursework is completed in both versions of the program. You are required to find a supervisor for your thesis and meet the minimum grade entry requirements. Please contact the convenor of the Master program (as listed above) with an outline of your proposed research so that they may suggest appropriate supervisors for you to approach.
Students in the advanced programs are encouraged to present their research for feedback and comment prior to submission.
Flexible Double Masters
In this program, two degrees are combined and electives are cross-counted so that both degrees are completed in one year less than if they were studied separately. A range of degrees offered by the College of Arts and Social Sciences are included in the Flexible Double Masters.

Flexible Vertical Double Degrees
In this program, a Bachelor and Master degree are combined and completed in a shorter timeframe than if studied separately. You can combine a Bachelor and Master degree from related disciplines within Business, Humanities and Social Sciences.
